The guys that are only around for a season (or a short time).
Probably used to refer to farm hands sticking around to plant the fields, then moving on.

The song is about the loss of youth and approach of middle age ...

"Out on the road today
I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said,
Don't look back, you can never look back. "

Picture a Grateful Dead sticker on the bumper of a car that represents the establishment. It's really sad. The "boys of summer" refers to the lost youth of the singer, and the way he wanted to change the world when he was young, but failed to make a difference since everything is still the same.

I think he means that she basically dumped him because it was going to be a summer at the beach with a lot of hotties and she didnt want to be tied down; and he is saying that "the boys of summer" (hotties on the beach) will be gone and he will still be there
