I think it may be a reference to growing older. When you're young, it's spring and in summer you'd be a young adult. The lyrics are pretty easy to figure out. One of the lines is 'a little voice inside my head said don't look back..you can never look back/ i thought i knew what love was..what did i know? those days are gone forever...i should just let em go.." and the ending lyrics state 'the boys of summer have gone..". So it's a young adult accepting the fact that he has responsibilities and must be mature. It may also be about a man telling a woman that after she has all of her young and short lived boyfriends and lovers, he will still be there for her 'after the boys of summer have gone..'. This is only an interpretation and probably wrong, since i don;t really like the song anyway. Hope this still helped you.

Have you listened to the entire song? It's the guys who practically live on the beach in the summer, looking for short, non-committed, shallow relationships. "I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong, long after the boys of summer are gone." He'll still be there when those other boys are just a memory in a photograph.
