I'm buying a laptop here shortly & I don't know what to get. I'm willing to pay $2000. I need something for my music (itunes), photos, internet & playing Sims2. Thats really all for now. I was looking at Sony VAIO, Apple Ibook, or a Dell XPS. What recommedations can you guys give me? Thanx!

I'd recommend ASUS laptops. I built mine on an ASUS bare bones, but ASUS also has pre-built systems. They're attractive, have very solid builds, and are usually more powerful than the average beast.

Mine is an ASUS S96J. You can get those pre-configured at a site like http://www.gentechpc.com

I personally purchased my processor, memory, DVD burner, etc. myself and put it into the barebones S96J and it totalled about $1100. It'll eat a game like the Sims for lunch :) But I built it about 6 months ago. There are probably better systems out now if you're willing to spend that kind of money. Still, look at the ASUS line.

As to the ones you were considering... I wouldn't recommend Dell unless you do a lot of research and can spec it out the way you want. Dell isn't known for putting together the best builds, in terms of powerful components. They usually offer great deals and cut corners.

Sony VAIOs are attractive, but overpriced, IMO.

Apple... well, it's a MAC. Some people prefer MACs. Again, I think they're overpriced, and you'll be limited in what you can play on it.

ASUS - high quality, uses carbon fiber on many laptops, manufactures some Mac laptops and some Sony, #1 number motherboard company in terms of sales.

SONY - expensive and overpriced.

Apple - (No gaming and smaller software selection although you may be able to install Windows on it)

Dell - decent support. If you look hard enough, you can get a really good deal without rebates. Uses ABS plastic for the laptop casing.

Not a Dell - with two motherboards and other repairs in only two years with less than average use.

The guys at the Apple store seem nice and they have a Genius bar that will help you if you just walk in - it's not that easy with other warranties. Wish I'd bought an Apple.
