Think of all your interests & ask yourself if any of those could be expanded into a business. Just keep in mind...what's your expertise? What are your interests? What could you imagine yourself doing?
By researching the prospect of starting your own business -- what it entails, what you need to know, helpful hints, etc -- you'll feel better prepared to take that plunge.
I found some book titles that are relevant to your specific question:

* The Best Home Businesses for the 21st Century by Paul Edwards
* Selling Online: How to Become a Successful E-Commerce Merchant by Jim Carroll

The easiest type of business to start is the one that has the most competition because it means that there are many people who need the service and/or product. Of course, you need to know how much you can afford to spend on starting up your business. Preferably, it should be about something you know already or can learn VERY quickly.

I have a home business in the health and wellness industry that I think is the business to be in right now. The baby boomers are looking for health and anti-aging and it is fast becoming a trillion dollar industry. They also are the most open to another stream of income and have the most disposable income.
Because the product has proven itself over and over again, it's easy to market to anyone, so you are not limiting your market in any way.

Depends on what you're good at. It could be a physical product or a service. Of course, if the market has a demand for it.
If you're good at something (and have experience in that line, preferably), you may be able to identify a niche within that you can dominate and become big. There is some bit of market research to be done, and chances are you could do it online cost effectively.
All the best!

Judging from the number of questions about home based businesses right here on Yahoo Answers, I would encourage you to find a home based business that would help others find and run home based businesses. There's a market for it!!!

Speaking only for myself, I'd like to run a small (no more than three bed) bed-and-breakfast out in the country, away from the hustle/bustle, somewhere where you can breath fresh air, away from cell-phones and traffic, a place where you can unwind and get a good nights sleep.

You should start something you are interested in, you have the ability to do, you want to do it, and you can afford to start it, with a plan that makes sense.
