If you are using Internet Explorer 7 with the tabs and leave one of them open for a long time, all the temporary files and cookies from all the tabs, stay in the temp directory, slowing it down. Completely quiting IE7 and having the Internet Options under Tools set to remove temp files when you leave, will speed things up a bunch.
You might want to look at the cookies in the temp file and see what you can get rid of, especially those that start ad.

besides what everybody said you need to also defrag and also how much memory do you have. If you have for example 256 MB that came with the machine it is time to upgrade and use more memory. Find out on the web how much memory yours can take. Example if it can handle up to 1 GB, you can not buy 1 GB module for each slot making 2GB as it will not improve it any and will be a waste of money. You should have two slots and if the max the computer can handle is for example,1GB , then you can any combination up to the max amount the computer can handle..

well... it depends, it might be because you have a full hard drive from installing CD software, in which you can get up to 10% or more of your hard drive back, depending on the properties of your hard drive, by right clicking the Recycle bin and choosing properties, then lowering the drive percentage it takes up.
Or if you recently installed a new operating system, it could take up all of your hard drive, or the components of your computer are not meant to use the operating system. I have built about four of my own computers and it happened to them also. It also can be because of the components of the computer are getting old and not working as well, and if this is the case, you might want to look into getting a new computer. I recommend HP.
