Your fabric should be folded right sides together to mark the pattern. You put your marks on the wrong side of the fabric. You should also use fabric tracing paper, not chalk.Chalk will smudge off after all the handling the fabric goes through, when constructing a garment.Fabric tracing paper is coated with a transferable wax that is applied with a tracing wheel. Look for the paper and the wheel at your fabric store.

This really depends on what you are making. Sometimes you need the marks on the front for pleats (and that sort of thing) and sometimes you need them on the back. If you are worried about marking the right side of your fabric, you can always use a needle and mark it with a small piece of thread.

The back is better. It also works much better if you use a special marking pen with ink that either disappears or washes off (instead of chalk).

On the wrong side, so that would be the back of the fabric.
