The numbers refer to the weight in ounces per linear yard of the fabric, which is often 54" or 66" wide.

Just reading the first answer and I have to disagree. Most of the time you run across thread count in sheets and in that case it will read 220 or 280. That is the number of threads in a square inch. The higher the count the tighter the weave and the smoother the sheet.
Your numbers can't be the width of the cotton fabric, which is usually 36" or 45"
I can't think of anything having to do with cotton fabric that would relate to the numbers you have given.
Where did you find these numbers? In what contex?

it usually means the thread count per inch.
