i broke the 4th/d string and i dont have any backups for it, so i was gonna put a 3rd/g string on it and tune it to d....will this work? it's only until i can get a new string, cuz this is really driving me crazy (having a broken string with no spares)

If theres absolutely something to be said about desperately not wanting to wait until you can get a replacement string, i guess you could substitute with what you have, but personally the non-productive result wouldn't outweigh just waiting till monday....

I think in theory it will work, but it'd be much better to have new strings

yes but it wont sound the same. but it will do until you get the new one.
