I think because it was similar to a train wreck. You don't want to watch the whole thing, but you can't look away because if something happens you wouldn't want to miss it. Complete nerds trying to fit in... like all people in high school whether we want to admit it or not. The underdog gets ahead... formula works for me... I still don't know how such a dumb movie became so popular either.

I believe that the sheer absurdity of the movie made it funny. From the chicken farm to deb's photo studio, from Napolean's grandma's crazy love life to his uncle's weird fascination with filming himself throwing 'touchdown' passes, from his brother's passionate 1-in-a-million match over the internet with Lufawnda...it was just the most ridiculously stupid movie to see.
You found yourself wondering "is this here and now in 2000 and something? Or is this meant to be in the 80's?"
For people who don't need to "get it", and just enjoy the absurd and the ridiculous, it hit the spot, and I guess there's a lot of people like that!

THANK YOU!
Finally someone agrees with me.
I tried watching this piece of cinematic fecal matter because my friend brought the movie over and claimed it was funny.
It was SO NOT FUNNY. I don't understand why people keep lying to themselves saying that it is. Are they so ashamed of themselves that they were duped out of ten bucks to go see this crap in the theaters that they have to hang onto to the myth that the movie didn't suck ballz?

Amen to that brother! I absolutely hate that movie! I don't know why it was such a hit. I guess the majority of American are just too stupid to see that.

Because people play "follow the leader". Somebody thinks it's funny, tells their friends, and the next thing you know you've got a movie that has no redeeming qualities whatsoever that's a hit. It happens all the time (unfortunately).

Napolean Dynamite was one thing: random. Everyone seems to grasp hold of things that are random and spontaneous, it makes them go "What the?" and then laugh about it. I personally liked the movie.

I kinda wondered the same thing. Yet, I sat and watched the whole thing! Your kinda like in awe, just setting there with your mouth hanging open and eyes scrunced down and thinking it can't get any more stupid. And, it does! And you still set there and watch! At least I only watched it one time! My son watched it over and over!

I am not sure but I just watched it with my son for what has to be the 10th time!
I think its because it shows young people in a more realistic and innocent way, rather then the sex and drug crazed pigs Hollywood usually depicts them as in "frat House" and slasher movies.
