The name gives it away: PHOTOsynthesis. Light (light energy) is absorbed by colorants in the plant (chlorophylls) and converted to stored chemical energy which can be used by the plant or by things that eat the plant (like you and me). Unless you're growing indoors, the usual source of that light energy is the sun. Plants without chlorophylls can't (for the most part) utilize light energy and must get their energy from other sources, like the chemical energy of other plants that can (think mushroom growing on a tree).
