Because you are forced to be in a building with adolescents who are growing into themselves, dealing with pressures from a number of places and just trying to figure out where they fit in - not just friend/clique wise, but also on a personal level.
Adolescence is a confusing time for everyone particularly because you haven't had that much life experience to figure yourself out completely. High school is not like the real world. Once you get out, you discover who you truly are inside. That doesn't mean the insecurities disappear completely. Everyone is always a little insecure about something and competition is always within people, no matter how old they are...

It's a time for teens to find themselves because you could be anyone when you're a kid. High school allows drama & competition so you could look beyond just yourself but everyone around you and how you affect them. Hopefully students will realize the ugly drama and the desperate competition for popularity or acceptance is unneccesary because it's what makes you happy and feel grateful about life that's really worth your time.
Then again, high school is full of suffering and sufferings could really make who you are. [little miss sunshine]

I always thought when I was in high school that I couldn't wait to finish and get away from the immature idiots.
But then I grew up, and discovered that's how most people are, it's got nothing to do with age.
School is just like the rest of your life, so suck it up.
