I don't want to be forced into using Apple format. What is the best alternative?

Well if you don't want to be forced into using Apple format if you buy a zune you be forced into Microsoft format. A mp3 player that works independent of any format is the Creative Zen that what I suggest.

You definately should get an ipod because it has more and better quality than the zune which is made by the# 1 piracy company named microsoft and the creative zen is better than the zune but less than the ipod because it doesnt have such good quality as an ipod, and you also have to think that apple is the greatest mp3 and mp4 brand out there, you wont get such as good quality with any other brand.

There you can compare the Zune to the iPod.
