A redshirt freshman is someone who has been in school for a year, but are on the field/court for the first time in their second year. They come for a year and don't lose a year of eligibility while they are in school but not on the team. Their second year in school is actually their first year of eligibility. Redshirt freshman sometimes become fifth year seniors. Greyshirt is the same thing except they came to college after being out of high school for a year.

Being "res shirted" means that you are a part of the team, practice with the team, and sometimes even travel with the team, but you play very minimally (if at all) so that you, in a sense, get an extra year of eligibility.
You have 4 years of eligibility in the NCAA. Some players are ready to play the first year, and will play 4 years. But some need that one extra year to really come into their own, so they "red shirt" them to give them the extra time to develop without violating their NCAA status length of time.
Hope this helps!!

He or she made the team, but doesn't play. Also he doesn't use up a year of eligibility. They do this allot when they have allot of talent, and or don't want to lose good players, so this is why they red shirt them.....
