only if you learn something from living through it.

Yes, that will become abundantly clear to every one next week when I become supreme God of the universe.

Seriously, as long as a person does not become bitter, YES YES YES YES. Their are things that you cannot learn unless you have been there. Those kinds of things, you never forget either. "Being there" is usually your motivation for changing the world. Proof: Dr. King, Nelson Mandela and if you don't know who Fr. Maximilian Kolby was, he volunteered to take the place of a condemned man in a Nazi concentration camp because the condemned man had a family. Fr. Kolby was put in a starvation bunker with other prisoners and while there he encouraged and ministered to the prisoners and led hymns. Plus, he was the last ones to die. I think he wanted to live long enough to help those people. Even if you think Catholics are &^%#$%^&* how can anyone deny that adversity made Fr. Kolby a great man.

History books about saints have so many stories like that. Contrary to what many believe, the church clearly admits and specifies which stories, esp the oldest ones, are probably legend. But I love stories like that because the inspiration and the triumph is still there no matter what your faith.

I believe it is a part of it...greatness takes strength that can be born from adversity.

Possibly. I started noticing a number of years ago that a surprising number of world leaders have spent serious time in jail, sometimes right before leading their nation. (Look at South Africa...) I've also noticed that being in the limelight or having a glorious success is often the prelude or corollary to awful stuff - family illnesses, etc. We all need to be more gentle with each other, and patient with ourselves!

Maybe not for greatness as much as greater adversity. Which will make you further appreciate greatness, when it graces you.

Not necessarily. Some people lose the battle and others rise above it. Adversity is just a welcome sign welcoming you into the real world.

Let's hope so... although it seems adversity outweighs greatness!
