I've never heard of anyone being put into the "loony bin" just because God the Almighty spoke to them. Well, maybe some of the Old Testament Prophets and contemporary martyrs of the Faith.
I've always thought, like you, that talking to God is prayer and listening for His voice in quiet times as meditation.

That is one of the best questions i have ever seen on here and good for you for askng it. Why should people be put away for listening to what god is telling them to do? We can talk to God all we want but when we claim he has spoken to us we are looked upon as crazy?! This actually outrages me, the whole topic of religion does so in order to save myself a lot of frustration tonight i will stop here but let me just say GOOD FOR YOU FOR QUESTIONING SOCIETY!

Well, that's only if you follow the system...
I talk to God when no one's looking, usually when I'm hiking in the mountains. Actually, I don't usually talk to God, just feel God's presence (unless I'm in the middle of a storm, on an icy ledge, ect... that changes things.)
As for when God talks to me, no one knows God's language exactly anyway, so we usually keep it a secret. And usually the only talking God ever does anyway is reminding me God exists or reminding me that the future will be better (and worse) so don't sweat it if you're in a crisis, or DON'T GO THAT WAY, STUPID!!!
It's when you try to interpret God's speech for the general public that people think you're nuts.
(Notice the lack of sexual pronouns in that response (i.e. her, him, his, she, he))

Because there are too many ppl out there who are just jealous that god doesn't love them enough to talk to them, so anyone who gets that priveledge is therefore blamed as being crazy or a devilworshiper. âªThat's how it goes, everyone knows....âª
