Energy is stored in the bonds of substances. When a chemical reaction occurs, the bonds of the reactants are broken and new bonds of the products are formed.

If the energy in the new bonds is less than the energy in the old bonds of the reactants, the extra energy is released to the surroundings. We call that an exothermic reaction and it means that energy is exiting the reaction.

If the new bonds have more energy than the reactants, then energy would have to be added into the reaction to make it click. This is called an endothermic reaction.
