I'm looking to take lessons for some sort of Latin dance, basically ballroom. [I already have a studio planned.] I was thinking of taking Tango, but I've heard that Salsa is also a lot of fun and very popular. What would be a good latin dance to start out with? I've taken ballet for a little while, but never this. [I know I should sit in a class and see if the dance is right for me, and i'm willing to do a slow or fast paced dance, they both seem like a lot of fun.]
Thanks for taking the time to read this and please, no stupid answers.

Rumba and ChaCha are my favourite Latin dances...both are heaps of fun! Rumba is slow, and ChaCha is fast...they're actually pretty similar apart from that, though (at least in my experience).
Why don't you try a class where you can try a few different dances?

Just get in a general ballroom intro. The basics are not so different as to make a full sampling impossible, and there are principles that remain among the dances. And doing two, or for that matter a half dozen, dances is not a big deal.

It is recommended to start with Rumba and Cha-Cha. They are the "foundation" of Latin Ballroom. That said, when there is an opportunity for Salsa or Jive/Swing - don't miss it.

Try the Latin Variety, because you will be learning more than one style. You will be more exposed to the different styles, and if you like the salsa section of the course, sign up for Salsa Dance. Plus, I really like bachata :-)

tango is a very elegant dance from argentina. however, it is not that spicy latino thing. if that's what you are looking for you should go for cumbia or salsa.

tango and cumbia/salsa are two completely different styles, depends on what you like. do a video search on each and see which one sound more appealing to you.
