It sounds like you want to work with the walking wounded. You might look at life coaching which you can do with any degree as the area is not licensed at this point. Your other option is to raise your experience in your classes. You might explore if there are other approaches you can take to inviting people to take advantages of the opportunities you are offering.

I was a teacher. You are right, being a social worker in a school system is a "thankless" job. I'd suggest being a social worker for your state (or another). It's a government job, good benefits, retirement, etc., AND you would be doing what you went to school for.
There are also private agencies that do social work that you might want to look at......I don't know anything about it, so I can't help you there, but I recently met someone who does that and really likes it.

HI THERE work in what u please and in what your heart tells u to do, people are people and that will never change in their ways of life. they will never be happy when it comes to ones self help towards another if u feel good in what course u are taking then so be it cause if u pay mind to what others think u will never be happy in any work field in American or any part of the world cause people will always talk and never be happy u do what u think u can do as best as u can preform your job skills as long as u are happy and those that paid your paid check that is all that counts. if not get a business that u r your own boss.

Psychology or another service whose professional practice implies a pro-active search from the user perspective. what other things do you like to do besides helping? do you like to influence people decisions, or, at least, you feel you are able to do it? do you like to analyze people behavior, or at least, you think you have some ability for that? do you like to research, investigate, know things in a deep way? are you attracted to human nature and the factors that elicit human behavior?
do you like movies and or books that explore human behavior and conditions?
if you say "yes" to these questions, perhaps you can think about Psychology.

Still along the lines of counseling, become a psychologist or psychiatrist. In most cases, people will come to you for help.

You could look into physical or occupational therapy, or physical therapy or occupational therapy assistant. Those are very rewarding jobs. But both would require more schooling.
