Because back during the olden days and so forth, they used to go into the newly weds home and tie cans under the beds to hear if the marriage was consummated. Now it is draw attention to the fact the couple got married.

I never have seen shoes tied to a car, I always saw cans- something that would rattle. The reasons people do this, I do not know.

I never heard of anyone ever tying shoes to the back of a car... I've always seen people use cans....

Originally they were thrown at the car/carriage (shoes are symbols of mastery/dominance, change/travel and luck). They wer a token of good luck if the vehicle was hit.
