I don't get what this means. What does this mean? It's from the story Cyrano de Bergerac.

Here is the whole line and the line before it:

THE DUENNA:
But what was the reason for all your debts?

RAGUENEAU:
Lise loved soldiers, and I loved the poets!
Mars ate the cakes remaining from Apollo:
- So it didn’t take too long, if you follow!

Ragueneau is in debt because he and Lise spent all his money. Lise spent money in the pursuit of soldiers (Mars is the god of war and of soldiers) and Ragueneau spent it on poetry (Apollo is the god of poetry).
The "cakes" are his money.
