18 is when you are a adult.

The age of majority is 18. One site I found said 18 and out of high school (I find this rather confusing. Does it mean that a 19 year old high school student can be dragged home from his own apartment by his Dad?).

If you are thinking about emancipation, that's a lot more complicated. I've just added the sites as they give you all the information better than I could.

for leaving a child home? umm. depending on how mature they are? I would say.... 13 or 14 unless they are trouble makers. then never.
