John you really ask interesting questions, in this type of lamps
which is known by the name of Ultrasonic Mist Decorative Lamp,
Ultrasonic vibration generates a dramatic swirling mist, Creates
sooting water sounds and acts as a natural humidifier, it uses
regular tap water and the mist contains a large number of anions
(anions commonly known as negative ions). The colors are made
by an auto sequential rotating light coloror..☺

It's because you seem not to have noticed that the water is somewhat warmer than lukewarm, but not hot. The water gets to warm because the machine heats the water it releases.

This is why you have to keep adding water or turn it off when the water level gets too low. Because it could explode or catch fire without the extra water to cool the unit.
