To clarify your question; it's the First World War. Many nations did not have their liberty "threatened". Switzerland was neutral throughout the war and was never challenged. Japan was never in any real danger and even gained reparations after the war as a member of the Allies. Even the United States was never seriously challenged domestically. Nations that were not protected during the war include Belgium whose neutrality was ignored by Germany. Ireland was on the the verge of obtaining Home Rule when the war started. This was shelved and led to the Easter Rising in 1916 followed by the Anglo Irish War and the Irish Civil War.
