Why are some people cheap tippers? I went to lunch yesterday with two other ladies and the bill came to $50. Their bill was clearly more than mine, but I ususally prefer to split the bill evenly. No big deal right? We each should have left $20. When I counted the cash it was $55 and that included the tip!! They really thought that was fine. Might I add that they had this young woman running back and forth a few times for water, extra dressing, etc. They really thought it was okay to leave her a 10% tip. I wound up leaving extra because I was so embarrassed by their "cheapness". They weren't bothered by it when I commented on it. I'll never eat out with them again, but I'm wondering why people are so cheap when it comes to tipping.

If anyone doesn't believe in the tipping system, please fill me in. I just don't get it.

PS: Neither of these ladies have money issues. We just finished doing some major shopping!

Sadly, a lot of people are just like that. The older generation typically didn't make 15% when waiting, so it's still the norm to give 10%. Other just don't think they should because they don't think servers deserve it. People feel like they deserve to get treated with the utmost respect and service while out, but they don't actually pay for that service. You're not only tipping the server because it's how they make their money, you're tipping because you wanted someone else to wait on you. You're paying for a service. You personally understand that concept. Alas, many don't feel that way.

well, i am a server, so i have obviously experienced it all, at least 10 would have been ok, 20 is awesome though. But i agree with the others that have answered so far, they have obviously never worked this type of job before. What a lot of people don't' realize is that a lot of servers have to tip out, meaning that a part of the tips we receive must go to other coworkers in the restaurant, usually at least the bartender. When customers don't tip enough, then we either don't make very much or actually have to pay out of our pocket, to cover this. And we only make 2.13 an hour most of the time when we do this as well. It's part of the whole industries ploy to make more money i think. So if people have a problem with the money they spend at a restaurant, they should consider complaining to the restaurant not punish the server.

Girl, I waited tables for 6 years! Those ladies just never had to work for their money like waiters have. Most people who tip crappy just flat out don't know any better! It's sad, but true. I would highly advise that if y'all go out together again, make sure it's to a place that doesn't require tipping. Even VERBALIZE that to them before you go somewhere, because they need to be aware that tipping is socially MANDATORY in a place where you sit and dine. If they don't wanna tip, tell them to go to McDonald's where the employees actually get paid at least minimum wage.
Yep... waiters make less than minimum.
I'm very happy that you noticed the service from this waiter because that's what really matters. For the service, though.... the waiters expect to be tipped. Good job on at least trying to call out those cheap-asses, though!

PS... You don't have to tip in those jars that little restaurants place at the counter. They also make a regular hourly wage.

Being a past waitress and female, I find a group of women are the worst tippers. They always want to divide the tab by what they had and always forget to add in tip. I agree with you, I would have left extra money as well. I don't know why this happens and I don't think wealth has anything to do with it. They are just cheap.

You think groups of women are cheap, try certain minorities. They usually have to bring a crowbar along to pry open their wallets/purses when the check comes. The waiters/waitresses start praying that a hostess will not seat a group of said minorities in their section when a group walks in.

To all cheap tippers out there...try working a week at waiting tables; I promise you, you WILL be converted!

I certainly believe in giving a 20% tip. Especially in a situation such as you just described. If I can't do that I won't eat out or keep the price of the meal down. Most waiters or waitresses don't get paid that well and depend on the tip as part of their income.

I hate cheap tippers too. I don't think most of them realize what low hourly wages the wait staff makes and they must have tips to have an income. My daughter's boyfriend works at a place where he is a car hop. He makes $3.15 an hour. Most of the time his tips are pitiful - - - I just don't think people realize that it is okay to tip car hoppers.

most women are cheap tippers...
they'd go dutch and give the exact change till the last cent..

only god knows why..

but they rather spend a bomb on thier designer attire?
that's one of the reasons why i've stopped waiting tables due to thier idiosyncrasies... (^_^)

my hat's off to all the good waiters/tress who has (or still is)been front liners!

Okay , here is what I think: the waiters or waitresses are hired to serve you.n so they are just doing their job.So they should be happy getting any extra money at all. Here's a question for you, do u tip the cashier at the gas station, do u tip the sales person at a store?Do u tip the bagger at the grocery store. Your answer to all of these questions is probabbly NO. so why i ask should someone who works just as hard as the other get paid extra and the other not get paid extra at all? This is injust to me. if u are going to pay one, hen why not the other. if u are going to look at it the way u are right now, then u should be tipping everyone who provides any type of service to you. A little something to think
about.

It's cheap. True, servers are just doing "their job" but the governtment knows that its customary to tip and its why servers dont even earn minimum wage / pay taxes on tips.

To all those customers who don't tip because the waitress is just doing her job: **** you.
