I believe that this story is teaching us to trust in God and his plans for us. There are many unexpected things that are going to happen to us. And we should know that each and everyone of those things is all just part of God's plan for us.

This is actually one of the more perplexing "could-be-real" stories of the Bible for me. I consider the Bible just a book full of stories meant to teach morals and lessons. I don't consider it anything more than a storybook.
Anyway, the cool thing about whales is that they do indeed vomit a few times a week. So it is quite possible that the whale, somehow, did swallow poor Jonus. However, I don't know how Jonus could have survived the bends. Whales do have a different lung set up (the way they store air, to be specific) than humans that allow them to dive great depths without being affected by the bends. I don't know if the stomach of whales are similar and creatures swallowed also are not affected, but according to the Bible they do!
So theres a little science for you (even though you didn't ask!). I guess it just tells you that it's possible to get swallowed by a whale and be on a personal cruise in a whale's stomach for a bit until you're vomited out (or pooped out - but I'd rather be vomited out)!
Or maybe just to stay away from whales because you may not be so lucky to be vomited out.

You could be in the middle of a problem and you see no possible way out of it. Trust God to get you out just as He helped Jonah get out of the belly of the whale.

It is a lesson in obedience, do what God says or things wont go well for you! Also it is a picture of Christ... dead three days ( the length of time Jonah was in the whale) and ressurected.

It is an example that if you refuse to do what God has specifically commanded you to do, your life will not go the way you want it to, until you submit to His will.

When we know that God is telling us to do something specific, it is in our best interest to do what He says!
