Best band of the last decade? No way.
First, I am a HUGE DMB fan. They are by far my favorite band. I've been listening to them since the 90's, so I have some experience with them.
When you ask if they are the best of the last decade, you have to look at what they have done since 1997. Well, in 1998, they released "Before These Crowded Streets," which is arguably one of their strongest albums. They then went on to record the unreleased "Lillywhite Sessions," which...while a strong body of work...was never officially released to the masses. Then, in 2000, they teamed up with Glen Ballard and released the awful "Everyday" album....and they have been with Ballard basically ever since.
Of course they have released a ton of live albums during this time, but one must keep in mind that theyre best, most creative work (Under the Table and Dreaming .... and Crash) was released prior to 1997. In comparison, look at what U2 has released since 1997 - they released "Pop" in 1997 (a decent album), and then "All that you cant leave behind" and "...Atomic Bomb" in 2000 and 2003, respectively. This is a much stronger body of work than what DMB has released in the same time period.
So best band of the last decade? I dont think so. I dont even think they are the best concert band over the last decade (again, one must consider U2 and Rolling Stones, to name a few). Best concert jam band? Maybe...at least in the 1998 - 2001 timeframe.
