The "cheapest" are the Gold Spike and Western, but I would not wish them on my worst enemy. If you check the travel sites you can often get a room at one of these dumps for $23, believe me, at that rate you are vastly over paying.

The Gold Spike is home to the famous or more accurately infamous "copper mine" which are actual( 40 or so) penny slots, not the "penny" slots you see around LV that cost you $3 a pop to play "max coin". We're talking actual, buy a roll of pennies and drop a penny in, slot and video poker machines, no TITO here LOL .That's a whole nickel(max coin) to the high roller video poker player at the Spike. If you can stand the smell of the place and the players, go for it. Just a little advice, take change, the patrons of the Spike will stare if you start flashing large bills, like a five.

The Westward Ho was mentioned by someone, the WH is closed. As is the Lady Luck, which is closed for renovation.

I think it's a much better plan, to get a great room at a low price. I look for value. Here are my recommendations for how to get a nice room at a good price..

1-avoid special events and large conventions

2-plan well in advance

3-stay Sunday through Thursday night, they are much cheaper than Friday and Saturday

4-use the travel sites to check room rates - then check those rates against the hotels own site to see which is better. If the online site is better ask the hotel if they will price match the better rate, some will, and this has a couple of advantages>you can cancel with no penalty this way, and if you gamble the hotel can comp your room, if you reserve it through them, if you buy a package from someone else they can't.

5-the best time of the year(2007) for ultra low rates is December 9th until the 28th. This is the slowest time of the year in LV and you can find some awesome rates at even the 4-5 star hotels..The other "generally" slower times of the year is from November 1st until the end of January then again from Memorial day until Labor day.

A couple of very nice hotels that have great rates if you time it right.

Four Star
Golden Nugget

Three Star
Sam's Town
Boulder Station
Orleans
Stratosphere

Two Star
Gold Coast
Palace Station
Vegas Club
El Cortez
Plaza
Arizona Charlie's Boulder

If you just have to stay on the strip, the best value's "generally" are the following.
Stratosphere
Barbary Coast
Riviera
Frontier-Their 1br Atrium suites are at times a great bargain

These are 4-5 star hotels that offer very good rates at times if you will take the time to sign up for their e-mail offers
Venetian
Mirage
Luxor
Las Vegas Hilton

If you gamble at all, sign up for the slot club card. Even if you don't think you play enough, you never can tell what kind of marketing offers you might receive. The hotels in LV want 99%+ occupancy, so even if you're a very low roller it's better to have you in that room than to have it sit empty. Believe it or not it is generally to your advantage, even if you're low rollers, for you and the wife/husband to have separate slot club accounts. That way each of you could double up on any free offers, that migh turn an offer for two free nights into four(etc)

Las Vegas is the most fascinating and entertaining city in the world and with hotelbye you will discover out more. Nowhere else in the world you may find a town that has all of the vacation amenities that merely a total resort destination could offer: luxurious casino resorts, fine eating, amazing stay entertainment and state-of-the artwork convention and trade display facilities. Las Vegas is surely a magnificent town and everything that you'd expect from a world-class town, and more, is below for your journey pleasure. One of the places you must visit in Las Vegas is the Fremont Street, a pedestrian area with a myriad of special sites.

My father-in-law went to Vegas every few months after he first retired. He stayed at the Westward Ho. It might not be the cheapest hotel but it must be close because he wasn't a big spender. They also give a lot of discounts and tickets to some of the shows. Great inexpensive food too. Vegas is fairly cheap to eat anyway.

Go to this site and click on Expedia in the middle of the page. Put for hotel with LAS as destination and your dates. I got Circus Circus for $59 a night, Riviera at $61 a night, Tuscany (off the strip) $53. That will give you the discount from that site. Good prices for a weekend on short notice.

The Western on Freemont is cheapest, but theirs lots of crack dealers hanging.

I think the best deal is the Gold Spike downtown. The casino is a little stinky, but, hell, all the casinos are a little stinky. Room was clean and basic ($24-30). Better yet, get a penthouse suite for like $39.

Gold Spike is the warm underbelly of Las Vegas. I love it.

In general, the cheapest on the strip are: Imperial Palace, Circus Circus, Luxor, Tropicana.

Almost all downtown are cheaper, with the exception of the Golden Nugget.

If you want the strip, i would recommend Luxor @ about $90-$100/night.

If you want downtown, you can stay in the Four Queens for $39-$49 a night, and it is decent.

Aladdin is typically not all that cheap, but now that the construction for the Planet Hollywood is over they are trying to bring people back to the hotel and offered a $49 a night rate. Check it out.

It varies from day to day. Go to a web site like Vegas.com and put in what price range you want. Try at least three sites. Take the lowest bid.
That is what would be the cheapest currently. However I must warn you some of them are yuck.
See what they say in Yahoo travel section about them.

WE STAYED DOWNTOWN AT THE LADYLUCK. THOUGHT IT WAS A NICE PLACE. TOOK THE BUS TO THE STRIP. YOU ALSO HAVE FREMONT ST EXPERIENCE JUST A BLOCK OR TWO FROM YOUR HOTEL. L.V. CAN REALLY BE A GREAT PLACE TO GO WITHOUT HAVING TO BREAK THE BANK. ENJOY YOUR VISIT.
