I am having trouble with internet connectivity. ipconfig /renew says dhcp server unreachable. I've tried 3 different NICs to no avail. I have formatted and tried again. Windows 2000 Pro Service Pack 4. No conflicts in Device Manager. Will tranmit but won't receive packets.

No router. Plugged in straight to the cable modem. Haven't tried USB connection to cable modem, but I want to get the NIC to work.

When I plug the CAT5 into another computer, it works like a charm. Any help? Thanks in advance.

I've pinged 127.0.0.1. It works. DHCP Client started and restarted. I've plugged in friend's laptops before, and the connection worked. Any other ideas?

One thing to try first is resetting the cable modem to clear out all previous Nic MAC addresses that it maybe holding on to. Try a soft reset by disconnecting the power from the cable modem leave it for ten seconds and reconnect the power. If that still fails to work then call your cable company Internet help desk and ask them to a hard reset of your cable modem.

Some other troubleshooting steps:
- Try getting a router and see if the router will issue your computer a dhcp address.
- If it doesn't, try setting a static address (within your router's IP range), and see if you can get connectivity
- If you can, it's something hokey about your DHCP client. If you can't, it's probably a software issue on your Windows computer - maybe you have a badly configured firewall and/or VPN client that's messing up your network stack. (Note that pinging will not necessarily turn up these issues, since the ICMP packets are handled very low down in the stack - also the loopback address is special, and not a good test of bindings to your physical device).
- Try your NICs in other computers to eliminate the (small) possibility that all three are bad.

Have you checked your LAN setting to make sure TCP/IP is installed and it is bound properly to the NIC card?

It is very weird that it is doing it even after a reinstall. Have you tried a new CAT5 cable? I know you said it works to another PC but might be a shot.

Also, does the cable modem have more than one port on it? Have you tried switching to a different port. I had the same problem with my XP machine for a time and had to log into the BIOS and set the NIC card back to default. Dont know if your bios will even have this option.

Hvae you tried connecting this PC to another connection to see if it works?

The trouble might be because you have changed your NIC. If you did - it has a different Mac address than the previous one - The DHCP server of the ISP will reject it then. You might have go back to install the original one - get the Mac address and clone it to your computer after you change the bad one.
Could try calling tech. support to tell them that you changed NICs.

Also, are your sure that the IP and Dns are set to auto in your network properties?

Update the Router firmware first. Restart everything see how that goes. If that still acts dodgy, update the Network card. Do an ipconfig, and see where your network address is coming from; it should be coming from your ISP, if not something is wrong in settings, and you may need to reset the router, or I should say reconfigure, however a reset may not hurt, especially if everything else is working fine.

try testing the IP stack by pinging the loopback address

did you check to verify that the DHCP server is functioning?
