In mythology. Monsters are the opposing force of the Hero. Sometimes they are bad. Sometimes they are animals that need to be destroyed. Sometimes they are Gods toying with us. They give hero something to overcome to strive to be better than others. They make the hero achieve a higher standing.

In the past people that were branded ~monsters~ were those with physical differences. But in reality it was those that branded them as such, those that judged based on an outward appearance. Who/what I would call a monster would be -on an individual basis would be one who has no remorse in the physical and mental abuse of another. They can also be manifestations of our own making. Inner turmoil, fear, hate, even love.. all can bring about pain and suffering. In which case could be perceived as a monster.
