try new plugs and cords, disturber cap, or the battery needs to be charged.

Sounds like you have not arranged the timing for the valves correctly.
Check the manual and make sure the cam wheels are in the correct position. On some engines you could end up bending the valve heads if you get it wrong.
Have you connected the spark plug cables back corectly? If they are in the wrong order it wont run.
To check for a spark, remove a plug, still connected. Lay it on the top of the engine. Start the engine. You should see a spark.
Dont dont dont, go near the hole where the plug fits. Its petrol vapor coming out of there and its explosive.
Just realised, a 79 might not have electronic ignition. If it has the old style distributer then the spark timing might be wrong as well.

Pull the number one spark plug, reconnect the wire, lay it down on some part of the lower block and have someone turn the motor over, you should see spark.

first of all, you need to make sure the fuel and spark are present.
Next, you'll need to check if the cam timing are set correctly.
When all of this are done correctly, pay attention when you install the ignition distributor, make sure it is pointing at cylinder 1 firing position while the cam timing for cylinder 1 at combustion stroke.

if it's getting gas and spark it's gotta go, check and make sure you have spark before you start tearing everything apart again.
