The orignal series of movies with Charlton Heston are some of my favorite science fiction. I used to ponder whether that scenario could actually play out. I have been told by a biologist friend, that the brain capacity of apes and monkeys cannot possibly allow them to speak and develope the capacity to manipulate machinery, etc.
But it makes for a great movie.

Yes it could, there is no telling how the gene pool could spin out of control in the future. Darwin said it best when he described life as survival of the fittest. Unfortunately, those may just be mutated apes several thousand years from now!
