Is terrorism a result of madness or of desperation?

Question

Do people blow themselves up because they go crazy, because they are brainwashed by other people, because they have suicidal beliefs?

Or do they blow themselves up because their lives seem hopeless, because they are treated like animals, because they don't see any future for themselves and their children?

It is defiantly not a result of desperation! The people of the middle east are one of the oldest civilizations in the world and can you or anyone name any great contributions given to society by them? Yes they are brainwashed but mrlebowsk's theory about the 72 virgins is wrong. Think about the number of terrorists and multiply that number by 72. Next think about how many virgins that you now of. Imposable!! The Koran or what ever must be wrong. My theory is the mis-interpreted the promise and they get a 72 year old virgin instead.

I haven't seen anyone mention money. Didn't Saddam offer to pay the families of suicide bombers a certain amount of money? Poor men and perhaps even some women might feel as though by blowing themselves up for money, this would help to get their family's out of poverty. Isn't that being desperate?

One mans terrorist is another mans patriotic or heroic revolutionary! The kind of extreme terrorist that you seem concerned about should not be looked upon as a mere mad man. That is the biggest mistake of all. Such extremists are motivated much more by things they love and desire than by those they hate.

Consider it yourself. Contemplate the things or persons in life you truly love. Now imagine that and those being defiled, raped, mutilated, or even murdered. What would you do?

Then again it has often been said the first sign of madness is loosing yourself for another, and that has also been construed as one definition of love!!

To me terrorism is a result of desparation. How would you feel if other nations would exploit your resources while destroying your environment for their own profits and leave you with practically nothing.

It is then easy for some radicals to convince "the people" that they have to fight back and become heroes to defend their country and families. Just like Bush is doing it to the American people!

Of course it helps to bring in a little "religion", no matter which one, as long as it serves the purpose.

the answers you have so far is way off, they have not been there,
but when you take a persons home country murder his family, starve him, destroy any and every thing precious to this person, he will ask himself what do I have to lose except this miserable existence,
he has no weapons that can be effective against his enemy's
then what choice does he have, some people had rather die than to be treated as such, what do they have to live for anyway?
now you have what some wants to call a terrorist??? so he straps a bunch of explosives around his body walks into a group of his enemy's and makes the ultimate sacrifice, now he is a terrorist?? some how the word ( a brave freedom fighter comes into my mind,)

They do it because they are evil people sent by other evil people. They have been taught that they will go to heaven & get 72 virgins. Several studies have found that desperation is NOT a motivation for them. They are motivated by hatred, religious zeal & the fact that they see it working.
