You should be polite and say please and thankyou, otherwise they won't be polite to you and may spit in your food or do something worse to it.

There's no law requiring it, but common courtesy dictates that you treat all human beings, including those that serve you with the respect that merely being a human being deserves. That includes asking for things by using the words "Please" and responding when those requests are granted with the words "Thank you."

Counter clerks, servers, restaurant managers, fast food workers, bag boys, hotel maids et al... are still human beings. They still deserve to be treated with respect.

It's absolutely shocking to me that someone had to ask this question. Actually it's not. I waited tables, (or worked somehow in a restaurant company), full or part-time from the time I was 16 until I was 28. I made good money but really saw the absolute worst in people...

I'm a waitress. We're people, just like you. And we want to be treated with respect, just like you. Why wouldn't you treat us the same way you would treat anybody else?

And, for the record, waiters and waitresses don't spit in people's food. Do you think we're all just out to get you or something? What kind of people do you all think we are?

If you want me to give you good service, you're best off saying please and thank you. If you want to have horrible service and a long wait for every single then you need, then by all means, be rude and never mutter the words thank you or please. But the fact that you're asking this question leads me to believe you have no class or manners, and that's what bothers me. Didn't your mom raise you to say please and thank you to EVERYBODY?? Treat others as you want to be treated.

You don't have to, but why wouldn't you? It's so easy, so simple, and it can mean so much, to both the server, who appreciates the manners, and to you, because your server will be more likely to treat you faster and more promptly.

It is always better to treat others with respect (saying thank you, please, yes sir, yes ma'am, etc) if you want to be treated in kind.

Now this does not always work to get respect in return, but then thats usually from [EXPLETIVES]. And if you don't offer respect first then you become a [EXPLETIVE].

The moral is.., "don't be an Expletive!"

For the same reason you would say it in a cab, bar, casino, hotel, etc. It is being polite to people who are providing customer service.

Yes. It makes for a pleasant time for everyone.

Nothing wrong with making things pleasant.

No, waitresses have a code that tells the cook when to spit (or worse) on it, they're not going to get a tip anyway if you're that rude.

Shouldn't matter who it is. If a homeless man offers to wash your windshield it would still polite to say -no thank you - should you not be interested. Whether or not you say thank you, no thank you, you're welcome, please... Determines the person whom you are. Not the quality of the service someone offers you.
