It helps to keep up the "air" of professionality. It helps remove the feel of a sexual act when they leave before you undress and when they return you are gowned and they can treat you more as a case than a person as they are only looking into your, umm, opening. For some reason they don't have this kind of practice when it comes to rectal or hernial exams for men. I think this is another case of double standards!

They must take phone calls , because one time I was waiting and
waiting and waiting , then the nurse came in and said he had a
emergency delivery . Talk about a nightmare. I think that
traumatized me to this day when I go for a checkup and the
phone rings.

To let you get undressed in privacy...when they examine you, they are only looking at one part, not the whole you, in all your naked glory.

privacy, if they stayed in while you were disrobing, it might make you feel like you were stripping for them.

I think it would be polite of the doctor to have a screen for you to change behind.

Who knows. .not like they aren't waiting in the hall in wild anticipation or anything.

OB-GYNs are yesterday's perverted frat boys.

NOT FAIR!!! They don't leave the room when you drop your drawers for a hernia check!

they see other patients and/or dictate in that time; their time is too precious to waste it watching us get undressed.
