melatonin works good for me especially if I can't sleep because my mind is racing on a lot of things.
Drinking chamomile tea or passion flower calms nerves.
Warm milk or Hot chocolate works for some people
Valerian root is good if nothing else works oryou need something stronger.

If you can't sleep because you are achy (Restless leg syndrome, etc...) try taking 800 mg of calcium, 400 mg magnesium, vitamin D and potassium when you are ready to lie down.

It all starts with how active your day is? Take a warm shower in the morning. Try to remain as active as you can, mentally and physically. Drink a lot of water during the day. Keep away from caffeinated and high fructose corn syrup loaded drinks. Brown Sugar is better than white sugar for you tea or coffee. Drink very moderate quantities of coffee or tea. Eat veggies and fruits. Eat whole grain breads and oat meal with jam/marmalade. Be regular with your bowel movements. If you can run or jog in the evening that would help. Take a warm shower [not hot] before you eat supper. Eat supper between 6.30 and 7.00 PM. Sit and do some writing or home work. If you watch TV do that before 9.30 PM. Brush before getting into bed. Wind down, read a good book and slowly fall asleep. A lot of these little things set you up to fall asleep easier and quicker have a calm sleep. You will wake with a fresh feeling. Brush once again, take a shower and you will feel even energized.

This is a schedule of events. To begin with, have a very light dinner, preferably, a bowl of soup and a bowl of fruits before 7.30 in the evening. Do some activity that relaxes you say listen to music or talk to your friends or spend time with your family etc. Then at about 9 have a cup of hot milk and by 9.30 you are ready for bed. Just lie down and breath deep just concentrating on how deep the breath goes and how long you can let go of the breath. Before you know you will be asleep. The key is consistency. Every night you should stick to the time you go to bed. That way you set your body clock and after about a month, the body will tell you it is time for you to go to bed at that given time. Good luck.

an easy way for me to fall asleep is to meditate while lying in bed.

Several websites teach zazen, vipissana, actualism and other forms of meditation.

The two I would recommend for you are actualism or listening to the nada

You can learn actualism free online at http://www.actualism.org

After you have been meditating; you will begin to hear the nada a sound and vibrational current near the right ear. Just relax and listen to the sound of the nada Put your attention in listening to the nada and the sound will become louder and louder.

I used to meditate this way 33 years ago when going to college. By listening to the nada; I could go past the alpha, the theta, and into the delta brain wave while remaining consciously awake.

I do have to say it was a wild experience feeing my eyes twitching in REM sleep and hearing myself snoring. Most people fall asleep around the theta brainwave pattern.

Reduce all stimulation as least two hours before you go to bed, like don't watch tv or get on the computer. Don't listen to loud music. Try taking a warm bath or shower right before bed. Sometimes it help to read a book in a low light- enough to see. Don't eat anything before bed. Relax, take deep breaths. Chamomille and lavander oils are very relaxing. You can put a few drops on either one or both on a warm wash cloth and place them over you face and breath it it. Also can put lavendar drops in the bath. A relaxing massage. Don't think about the days events, focus on breathing and relaxing. The nights are for you to clear your mind, you can worry about other things the next day. Play relaxing, gentle music. Not too loud. A white noise machine may help. Keep things quiet and toned down.

meditation or any kind of relaxing ritual. Do it at bedtime or at least a half an hour before bedtime. Shower/Bath with eucalyptus and lavendar oil, let the steam enveop you. after you gat out and get dressed for bed lay down on your bed close your eyes and think of light, a soft radiating golden light that starts at your feet. let it flow up through your body and let it relax every muscle in your body as it touches it, once it reaches the top of your head imagine all negative energy has left your body, all stress has left your body. Try this every night for a week and let me know how you do.

Take melatonin. It comes in 1 and 3mg, in time-released and non-time released. Start off taking 1mg 30min. before bed. You can take up to 3mg a night, but start low to see how much you really need. DO NOT EXCEED 3MG A NIGHT. Melatonin is a natural hormone produced in the body which acts like your biological clock telling you when to wake up and when to go to bed. When these levels are out of whack you may have problems sleeping or staying asleep. These are all natural and are not addicting. The best place to get them is GNC, they are priced around 7.99 for 120 of the 3mg I think...they aren't that expensive.

Focus on your breathing. Also listen to soft music like nature sounds or meditation music in the backround. Knocks me out in a few minutes.
