The Operating System (OS) provides an interface between end user and hardware. It is basically a hardware management system. When you save a file, it is the operating system negotiating with the hard disk and making all of the arrangements and transfers via a software driver that tells the OS how to talk to the hard disk drive.

An operating system is the main program on your computer which allows you to actually do something with it. Having no OS is like having a human without a life. Different OS's like Windows, Macintosh, Linux, SCO, and UNIX are set up different. I believe Windows is the easiest to use, as Macintosh is set up very different. I haven't used Linux, SCO, or UNIX. I think SCO and UNIX are very old OS's, but I'm not sure. Just a little something: Windows Vista was set up very similar to Mac OS X, so they had to change it a bit. Using a different OS is like learning how to use a computer all over again, in my opinion. I'm a whiz at Windows, but I'm as expert as an infant using Macintosh.

Without an operating system (OS), your computer is worthless. The OS is the interface between the hardware and the software (and ultimately between the computer and YOU), no regular program (OS is also a program, but a special one) can run without an operating system.
The OS gestionates the resources of your computer, it loades your programs into memory, it controls the traffic to your screen and peripherals, etc.
Without it, it's like having a car without wheels.

If you are interested in operating systems - this might be the time to try Ubuntu or Linux. It can be downloaded for free at: www.ubuntu.com.

Ummm...the most obvious reason is - a pc with out an operating equipment is a sparkling black demonstrate screen. no longer even dos instructions if no operating equipment there is not any way of speaking with the processor or puzzling rigidity or keyboard or mouse or demonstrate screen even. a pc with out operating equipment is type of a vehicle with out engine - or a e book with out words revealed in it - or a television with out cable. aka - doesnt do you any good.
