In short because there are no cables to connect, you can use it anywhere within range, not just where the network socket is.
Wireless still isn't as secure / fast as wired networks though, for most web browsing wireless with security enabled (WPA) is fine but for mass file transfers, 100 or 1000 mbit Ethernet is way faster.

Because its a real pain to run ethernet, since wireless G has been the standard, wireless is more economical, and more priactical than a hard wired lan.
Businesses, however, still use a wired lan because of the cost of IT required to keep a wireless system up and running. Not to mention performance benefits of being wired.

the devices are relatively cheap. I only have one wireless enabled device in my house for use in the pool area. I just ran CAT5, RG6 and fiber all through my house...
when compared to the performance of Ethernet, Wi-Fi is a joke...
