okay, so at the start of the school year, my brother was like a skater dude and wore those types of clothes. and now, he has dyed a blond streak in his hair, wears black, wears tight pants, has his hood on a lot, and all he does in his free time is sit on his butt at the computer and listen to music. i am worried about him, why is he changing like this?

I guess he is trying to find out who he is and where he fits in

My kid did almost the EXACT same thing. When I asked him about his bizarre dress-style (which included lots of pink, along w/the black), he said he wants to be "unique" and dress like HE wants, not like others tell him too. The BIG difference is: my kid's in a band, having gigs and earning $! How can I complain?

Well, whaddya know? Other than the band, this is JUST what I DID at his age! I used different clothing, but I just wanted to separate myself from the posers and wannabes (we called them other things, back in the Stone age! lol). So, I'm okay w/it. It shows the kid has IMAGINATION and guts...he's not following the herd! (Who likes a copycat?)

That makes me proud, no matter HOW dorky he looks (sometimes, to me).

It sounds like YOU have a bigger problem (wanting to fit in and worrying what others think) than your bro does! My advice: worry about yourself, 'cause the bro sounds just fine! And don't worry, he'll probably go through several more transformations before he settles down.

Just pray...with all your might, that he doesn't do what MY poor brother did, around age 30 (for no apparent reason!): BECOME A REPUBLICAN!

I am still shocked and awed and really...DISAPPOINTED! (No kidding).

Hmmm... sounds exactly like my brother (minus the hair). Don't worry, every person changes... some more than others. It turned out to be a phase for my brother but some last longer than others. As long as he still treats you the same way, he's fine.

I understand that it can be weird, but he's still your brother and the same person (despite what he looks like on the outside).

He's probably going through a phase. It can last a couple of months until he gets bored with it -- and going from something active like skateboarding to something sentient like websurfing is pretty extreme -- or he goes into total couch potatoe mode. Before there were computers, boys got hooked on ham radios, CB radios, and plain old TV. This is nothing new.

Is he old enough to date girls yet? If so, you might want to interest him in them. Especially girls who skate or like the same music he's now listening to.

Maybe he wants to be goth. It's just a phase that he's going through. Don't worry he'll find something else to get into before long. It's normal for teens to do this.

Sometimes kids change the way they dress because they want a change. My step-son used to get buzz cuts and weat camoflauge clothes, and then dressed in button down shirts and nice jeans (When he discovered girls) and now he dresses in band t-shirts, but still dresses nice to impress girls. Talk to your brother and see if he will talk to you, but most likely it is just a phase he is going through.

He's going through a phase...he will change a lot and quite often as he grows up. Stop worrying, it's "normal".

he is being preasured by the media and his friends to dress this way because a majority of teens (and preteens) find this to be normal and more acceptable than being true to yourself.
