After watching a TV special on the Newport Jazz Festival, I recently got into jazz music. I really don't have an idea of who's who in jazz music, so does anyone have any favorites? I'm really looking for classic instrumental jazz music that features the piano, sax, trumpet, bass, and drum instruments. Not really any vocals. I recently bought a compilation jazz album at a music store, but I don't like it that much. Please share your favorites.

Classical Jazz is similar to Blues. I like progressive or fusion jazz. Not much of it played anymore. Some of my favorites are
Chick Corea, especially with Returned To Forever.
Mahvishnu Orchestra, with John McLaughlin.
John Luc Ponty
Jeff Beck after his term with Frank Zappa. His older music was rock.
Lenny White, Stanley Clark, Billy Cobham, Herbie Hancock and George Duke to some extent.
Chuck Mangione
Kenny G
Spyrogyra, Weather Report, somewhat, you might like Yellowjackets.
Al Dimeola, Paco De Lucia

Most of these have very little vocals.
Gino Vanelli (vocalist) put out a good jazz album - The Ghist of the Gemini. Most of his work is more pop or clasical.

A lot of these are difficult to find now a days, but are worth pursuing. Hope you enjoy
Chick and George are keyboards, Lenny, Billy, and Herbie are drums, Stanley is bass, Al and John, Jeff and Paco are Guitar, John Luc is electric violin. Chuck and Kenny are Sax. The others are groups or combinations of these artists.

If you only bought one jazz album (which would be a shame, but anyway), make it "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. Others on the recording include John Coltrane (sax), Cannonball Adderly (sax), Bill Evans (piano), Wynton Kelley (piano), and Jimmy Cobb (drums, and the only currently living member of the group left).

There's a great 'dual disc' edition available that has a great DVD documentary about the recording on one side. That's the one to get if you can order it. It will help put it in context and you might be able to appreciate it it sooner.

I love that recording--it never gets old.

Billie Holiday, she sings, but man can she sing. And of course the classic duke ellington. Also, Yoko Kanno has alot of music with some classic jazz style stuff. And she doesn't sing too much. ALso, the person who did Big O did it up.

I'm happy to help a new listener. I has helped in the same way, not too long ago. These are some great albums that I think you're asking for...

Miles Davis Kind of Blue album. It's a great album for a beginner, and it's great even if you've heard a whole lot of jazz. Get it. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:5277gjvr86ib

Thelonious is another great and important master of jazz. I suggest that you start out with the Monk's Dream album. Don't operate heavy machinery while listening. Monk swings the hardest of any jazz musician, in my little opinion. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:cy5ibkh9hakn

This is the album that really turned me onto jazz. I still enjoy it and respect it. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ki7ibka96ak0

This is a great album, centered around the guitar playing, although McCoy Tyner is at his best (piano player from Coltrane's band). It's another great album that's easy to like. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:18he4j371wav

Here's a great album that you really have to hear. I can't even talk about it. The whole band is amazing. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:fnx1z87a8yv1

Another great and easy to like album. Freddie Hubbard is at his best through the whole album (on trumpet, fluglehorn). It's a concept album, and it really does flow like the sea, as Herbie intended it to. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:x94uakjkgm3n

Horace Silver plays piano with soul. The songs are great and so is the band. Everything works on this album. It's another easy to like album too. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gzdyyl68xpmb

Please trust these suggestions. These are classic albums. They are accesible to the beginner's ear.

PS-Here's a modern great. Personally, I think it's a great album. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:zx1ibkr9sakb
