I can drive both...just looking for opinions and why. Also, do you think one is better than the other when it comes to speed/acceleration, or are they both pretty close nowadays?

If you drive in stop & go traffic, go automatic, you will save you knees and leg cramps ... and you can do other things while you wait in traffic .... If you live outside the city and drive a lot, still an automatic would be nice .... but if you are looking to have a thrill ... then go stick. Most people when buying a used car, will be looking for an automatic, so remember that, if you plan on selling it in the future, a stick is harder to get rid of, or at a lower price then an automatic. (but not 100% of the time)

An auto will use some of your engines horsepower and leave less for the wheels and therefore hurt acceleration and fuel mileage, but it is a small loss. The quick gear changes an auto offers cannot be matched with a regular manual tranny and this will help offset the horsepower loss on acceleration. When it comes to durability you can't beat a manual. A manual will not overheat while towing or with high horsepower engines and is more tolerant to abuse. I prefer an automatic myself, but right now I am building a 383 stroker and plan to put a blower on it so I will be in the 500 horsepower area. Since my power is so high and I plan to tow trailers with this pickup I am going to use a manual for durability. However modern automatics are pretty tough and if everything is stock, it really comes to your own taste.

Stick for speed and acceleration, you control what gear the transmission is in, automatic, if you have a lot of stop and go traffic that you are sitting in, then I would choose it. Depends on the car also, if it's a fun car (mazda 3, I would choose stick) if it's a more luxurious car go with a the auto.

i used to prefer a stick. in fact, i drive a stick to this day. but by the time i light a cigarette, answer my cell phone, locate a new cd, take a drink of my mountain dew, and stick a finger up my nose, i need to grow an extra arm or two. go with the auto. you are not mario andretti, you don't need the 'extra control of the engine' or the better acceleration that a stick will give you. just drive your car the way ya oughta, and be careful, please

Go stick! Better mileage, longer wear. Automatics have problems and stick is much more fun to drive!

Always Auto. 20 years ago autos were not as good at making quick decisions but now they are computer controlled and will always shift faster and better than a stick. Also, the clutch is hard on your knees and ankles when you get old.
