ok just about 3 minutes ago i let my dogs in from the backyard and i noticed a star that i don't think ive seen before. it looks just like one of those flickering stars that are flicker blue and red only just seems a tad brighter, but not much. and i just looked out again and i saw some kind of very fast blink about 4 inches away from it from where i am to it and i hardly saw the blink.

Many optical illusions are possible when looking at the night sky.
The blue and red flicker you talk about makes me think you're looking at a star called Sirius in the constellation Canus Major.
If you stare at it on a clear night it can look like a police car is flashing it's red lights as it runs around the star in a circle!
And the illusion doesn't go away just because you know it's an illusion. What fun!
Keep enjoying the night sky. It's good for you.

I watch the sky lots every night. Chances are you don't pay a lot of attention to it.
It sounds to me like you are just observing a plain old, ordinary star whose light is being refracted by the atmosphere and appears to be blinking different colors. This is the same effect that makes the air over the roads appear to shimmer with a mirage effect when the road's hot. I see this all the time with stars. Yawn. Trust me, it's not a UFO.
Actually, I was going to mention Sirius also. The flashing effect is particularly pronounced with Sirius, I often see it with that star.

If it was in the air and you have not identified it, it was an unidentified flying object. Someone else seeing it might well have identified it so for them it wasn't a UFO. It was probably an aeroplane.

For you it's an unidentified flying object.
But I identify it as an airplane.
