hi, i have an old laptop. it was working fine till it just stopoed, so i opened it up, hooked to another monitor replaced the ram, took the off the cpu and turned it on, nothing happened and no beeps came on. i though it is a main board but the one of the leds comes on, and i can feel the harddisk running, but nothing else. help..................................................

sounds to me you damages you motherboard, see if you can get a new one anywhere for cheap, otherwise buy a new pc.

It won't do much of anything without the CPU - you didn't mention if you put it back in. Most of these die after the little fan that cools the CPU dies or gets clogged with dust. If that is the case, clean or replace the fan (if it has one). You can try to order another CPU like from www.newegg.com, but if it is really an old unit, it may not be worth your time & money.

The notebook cannot perform any BIOS ROM tests without the CPU. You cannot remove the CPU to test the mainboard. There is normally a list of troubleshooting procedures for notebooks in the corresponding service manual. For Thinkpads we call them Hardware Maintennace Manuals. You have to find the corresponding service manual for the notebook before you can troubleshoot it.

most likely your problem is on the power supply area, start with the ac adapter, the the cord itself and then the first components of the power supply area.
