George Washington DID NOT wear a wig. Even though wigs were fashionable, Washington kept his own hair, which he wore long and tied back in a queue, or ponytail. He did, however, powder his hair as was the custom of the time.

A lot of people in those days shaved their heads to rid themselves of lice. They wore wigs to cover their bald pates.
Later it became fashionable to wear powdered wigs as part of formal attire, so people wore them whether or not they had shaved their heads.
Yeah, we were all infested by body lice in those days, and no one bathed because they considered it unhealthy.
Ugh!
This is something the "time travelers" in Science Fiction stories never have to deal with for some reason. But we were stinkers in those days, and I doubt that an actual time traveler could stand to stay in that past very long (probably about as long as it would take to catch some of those lice)
