I don't know where you are, but I have been looking for a wii, and it hasn't yet arrived where I am now. They have the Japanese version.
However, the sales guy, a very nice man, actually recommended that I don't buy it unless I am desperate because I might have to end up buying Japanese games - which involves the extra issue of language - and therefore find it hard/expensive.
Rather, he recommended, I should place and order for when the wiis arrive so I get the local/regional version where I could play any games available locally, and get them cheaper than if I had to import.
So I'd advise you to do the same, wait for the version for your local market to arrive, unless you are desperate, or plan to move to the USA soon.

I guess it should work, it would help if we knew were you were from. But with most systems, when you get import games they don't really work on the system, but that was for the old systems. I am assuming it is the same way. I would just get a Wii from whatever country you are in.
