Living in some alley in New York.
I would use the local shelter as an address. I would get a job at a local fast food establishment, and open a bank account with my first paycheck.
I would continue working and saving until I saved enough money to move to a warmer climate and buy my own place.
Living in a shelter gives me free food, shower and bed. I can save a lot of money this way until I get back on my feet.

Prison's not so bad after the first month or so. You start to get the hang of how everything goes, not to mention the free food, a place to sleep, and a gym to work out in.
If you ask me that sounds much better than freezing or starving to death on the cold streets of new york city. Of course never experience the later, but just going from what I do know and what I would imagine to be like.
