Updating iTunes will have no effect on your existing music library (all of which is stored in a completely different part of your computer's file structure). You will, however, probably be asked if you want to update your iPods' firmware after upgrading iTunes. Two of the best benefits of doing so that I know of are the ability to adjust your screen brightness (so it won't burn through as much power whenever it turns on) and gapless audio playback (where you'll no longer have a moment of dead silence between two consecutive tracks, even when they originally blended together on the CD). Also, it could just be differences in the settings I had with v6 and v7, but I've found that my iPod now soft-ejects as soon as it finishes syncing, where it's still displayed in the iTunes sidebar menu, and you can manually resync it from iTunes, but it no longer shows up as a readable drive, and the menu screen will pop up on the iPod instead of the Do Not Disconnect icon.

One issue with updating iTunes, however, is that some people have had issues with the software locking up, especially when syncing their iPods. If you've got an older/slower computer, this might be an issue that you need to consider before updating, but I got my laptop shortly before it was discontinued 18 months ago, and I haven't had any problems of this type.

Nope. iTunes will recognize its past self, and transfer all music to the newer program. The iPods will also update, with no music loss
