If a person is not born in the United States, they are prohibited from running for President.

Should this law be changed to allow any U.S. citizen (provided they meet the other criteria) to run for President?

No, this is a right reserved for citizens who are born American, not for people who become nationalized. Naturalized citizens have all the rights of native born citizens except for this one. That's the way it goes.

And on a practical level, you would NEVER, EVER get this through 2/3 of the state legislatures, to say nothing about the House.

The desire to tinker with the constitution is rife. The constitution should not be changed unless it is absolutely necessary.

No. I think the original reason for the rule was that if we had a foreign born president, somewhere along the line he or she may feel more alegience to their home country than to the United States.

No. The Constitution made that clause to prevent foreign rulers from coming to America and becoming president. Our Founding Fathers recognized that America is best ruled by an American, someone who knows the needs of American people.

If a foreigner came to America, how much patriotism to America do you think he has? He probably has more loyalty to his home country. Not to say that all Americans are ultra-patriotic, but at least, they have lived their lives in America so they know how Americans think and what they want.

Anyone with the true qualifications would win if they stood for the office. Unfortunately it is difficult to find any at all.
Everyone is in the same boat. If one was free from lust, anger, greed, ego and attachment they would be accepted.
Such candidates are like gold dust.

No.

But if your are bent on it, make it that they can run after 35 years of citizenship to put them on par with other Americans.

I personally prefer to keep it as it is. There are enough qualified US born Americans to fill the job.

No.....the founding fathers had a reason for creating this criteria, and it has served us well for more than 200 years. Old southern saying goes...."if it ain't broke, don't fix it"......we have already "fixed" too many things which weren't broken.

ABSOLUTELY!!! America deserves the best. If the best candidate was not born in the US, why should we miss out on having them as our president?
