Believe me, I live here, it's not. Not just Louisville and Lexington, but even the small towns throughout the state have some of the nastiest, sourless, impolite jerks anywhere. I've met people from Michigan, Dallas, Maryland, and NYC that had much more class and manners than most of the people from KY. Not long after you leave KY and cross into TN, it's like a whole different world; anywhere from Texas and Oklahoma to Tennessee and the Carolinas, Southern hospitality is alive and well.
I always smile, I'm friendly, and use good manners ("yes ma'am, no sir, etc.) Somebody explain this to me...

I live in TN- close by the Kentucky border. I think the people from Kentucky are sweet compared to the people here.
I guess it just matters who you know and how sick of your own state you are.

I've met folks from Maryland and especially Michigan that were Jerks, so our experiences are different .
I live in northern Ky and noticed a mean spirited undertone too. All the "immigrates" from the upper states usually settle around the borders and slowly migrate south as housing needs are depleated.
Everyone is different, some folks are just plain bitter. You keep on saying yes sir, yes, ma'am and such. Don't let this change the way you appear to have been raised. This good behavior is a reflection on you. Their poor behavior is a reflection on them.
PS: U R right, the further south you get, the friendlier the folks are, especially texas

Another Kentuckian here. Louisville mostly, but also Lexington and Bardstown. Believe me, you ain't just blowin' smoke. Small towns...I met some of the most self-centered and vicious people in Bardstown, although some of the nicest also. The mean-@$$es make it worse for everyone. And what gets to me is that they make believe they are being so friendly while they're stabbing you in the back. Oh, I could tell you some stories....
Kentucky is all about love when it comes to Derby time, especially here in Louisville, when the world pays us a visit and we want the tourism money. But the rest of the year, toward each other, there are things definitely lacking.
I say ma'am and sir too, and until they tell me otherwise, I address them as Mr. or Mrs./Miss.

Been through kentucky and the other southern states a few times. I'm from up nort der eh myself, but what I noticed is not so much more friendly, but more polite - it seems a bit more old school down there compared to what I'm used to.
I was always Sir. Please and thank you, etc.,... Just seems to be the norm but I don't know if that means more friendly exactly - that's one of those subjective things - people were just as rude driving for example. I just don't think there is all that much difference between people down at the core - just different ways of expressing it in my opinion.

Welcome to my world, I live in Woodlawn Tennessee and I think I have some of the people in Kentucky relatives living here. Boy the people that live here have to be the nastiest, rudest bunch of ignorant people I have ever met and I use to live on Long Island and the people there are much nicer.

I spent a touch time in KY many years back and that i loved the folk I met. I truly ought to assert that I had 2 of the superb potlucks of my existence there - no longer certain the call of city i grow to be in, i imagine they made the ginger ale Ale 8 One. They were large people. and that i beloved the little smiley faces on the licence plates. (a minimum of i imagine that grow to be in Kentucky)
