I am going to assume your problem is limited to the volume icon. I will also assume you have windows xp. Look in the control panel and if in classic view, click on Souds and Audio Devices. There under device volume, you will see a place to check for your icon to be on the task bar.
If in Catagory View, click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices. Then click adjust the speaker volume. There you will see a place to check for your icon to be on the task bar.
There are other locations to remove this, like msconfig at the run box. But I believe the simple solution will solve your problem.

Easy to do...Right click on your toolbar on the bottom of the screen. This will give you some options of what you want seen and don't on the toolbar. Or go to the Control Panel and Sound Options.
For icons on the desktop, you can always click and drag them to the desktop. Or create a shortcut. To do a short cut, just right click on the program and click Create Shortcut. For instance if you want a Word shortcut, then go to Start, Programs, Word and right click on word. Or you can always click and drag.

Usually its a sound driver install issue. You can either reinstall your sound options, fully, or try a drag and drop to the Systray from an open Control panel.

Oops, Taba has it right
