Tootsie should have won that year but everybody was falling all overthemselves praising Ghandi. The film was very good, but I think the Academy was honoring the man more than the movie.

The movie won best picture because it was a big hit. It also portrayed Gandhi's life and how he got India's independence from Britain. Why else would it win? It was just because he, in real life, had so much impact on the world. Also, history teachers use the movie to teach their students about civil disobedience and Gandhi's independence movement. He is on the regents you know(well for those who have to take regents)!!

My god man! Have you not seen Ghandi? I's an awesome movie. If you don't appreciate now try watching again when you are older and see if your opinion changes is all I can say.

Social "politics" has everything to do with it. Or, as became the proper wording during the Clinton administration, "political correctness" has everything to do with it. God Bless you.
